First Impressions

Adam Marshall sees Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell introduced to the media... There was a tangible extra buzz of anticipation around the press conference inside the Knights Lounge at Old Trafford. This was supplied largely by the throng of Japanese journalists and video camera operators who were gathered to follow the every word of new United No26 Shinji Kagawa. However, the discussion was dominated, as usual, by questions directed to Sir Alex Ferguson. The boss looked tanned and fresh after a summer break and cracked the occasional joke. When asked if he'd recovered from the heartbreaking finale to the Barclays Premier League title race, he replied with a smile: "Red wine helps!" Kagawa took the full glare of the spotlight in his stride, speaking through an interpreter but pledging to learn English as quickly as possible. I have to confess it wasn't my first sighting of the Japan international since his arrival, as I'd seen him at Carrington on Wednesday, and the initial impression is, although he's short in stature, he exudes confidence and inner calm. For all the fuss that surrounds the Asian superstar, he appears very level-headed and clearly appreciates that signing for a club of United's size and popularity will raise his profile into a whole new stratosphere. Nick Powell is perceived as one for the future but handled the occasion with a measured assurance. The 18-year-old was at pains to point out how different life at Old Trafford will be compared to when he was a main man at Crewe but Sir Alex offered plenty of words of encouragement for the teenager, including the promise of training regularly with the first-team squad

Giggs to skipper Team GB

Ryan Giggs has been named captain of Great Britain's Olympic football team. The United veteran, 38, was chosen by manager Stuart Pearce to wear the Team GB armband at this summer's tournament, which kicks off at Old Trafford on July 26 when the hosts face Senegal. "Obviously I have experience and I can pass that on," said Giggs. "Obviously it is a tremendous honour to be part of the Olympics. Stuart has given me the captaincy, which is even better so I am really looking forward to it. "It is a unique experience and one from the start that I wanted to be part of when I got the opportunity. I think it just got more and more exciting as the Games got nearer and then when the squads were announced I was obviously really, really proud to be involved." Giggs is joined by Tom Cleverley in Great Britain's squad, while fellow Reds Rafael and David De Gea will attend London 2012 with Brazil and Spain respectively. Ji-sung park's parting worlds

In an emotional sign-off to his Manchester United career, Ji-sung Park admits he'll never forget his seven years at Old Trafford. Park joined the Reds from PSV Eindhoven in 2005, played 205 times and collected eight major honours, including four league titles and the FIFA Club World Cup. "My time at United will last in my heart for the rest of my life," he told ManUtd.com. "It’s been a great privilege to be part of such a great team, to have won so much and to have played with special teammates and for the greatest manager in the game. "I would like to thank everybody at the club who give their best every single day to put every player in the best condition to enjoy their football and achieve success." Park was a firm fans' favourite at Old Trafford and his name was often sung loudly by United supporters, even when he wasn't on the pitch. “The fans have been fantastic to me and I will always remember them with great affection," he said. "Now, I’m looking forward to giving everything for a new challenge at QPR, where I will bring all my ambition and spirit I have gathered at United. [Those qualities] will be with me forever."

New Numbers for trio

Antonio Valencia will wear the iconic no.7 shirt for Manchester United in 2012/13. ManUtd.com can also reveal that summer signings Nick Powell and Shinji Kagawa will wear no.25 and no.26 respectively. Ecuador winger Valencia requested the no.7 shirt - worn previously by United legends such as George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo - following Michael Owen's departure this summer. The Reds' remaining squad numbers for the 2012/13 season are yet to be confirmed.

Valencia deserves no .7

Antonio Valencia is the perfect person to fill the iconic no.7 shirt, according to former team-mate Gary Neville. The shirt, famously worn by the likes of Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo to name but a few, was unoccupied following Michael Owen's summer departure. ManUtd.com announced on Wednesday that Valencia had asked for the shirt and Neville feels he is a fitting addition to the no.7 club. "He’s been a fantastic signing for United and thoroughly deserves that no.7 shirt," the former skipper told ManUtd.com. "Having played with him for a year or two, I can tell you he’s a brilliant footballer, especially to play behind as a right-back. He does the right things at the right time, he works back to help out when you don’t have the ball, he delivers good crosses and he can beat a man. "He’s a real handful to play against and I was really pleased to see him score a few more goals last season. That’s probably the only area of the game in which you’d like to see an improvement. "He has a wonderful shot and he stays calm under pressure. I’d love to see him chip in with 10 or 15 goals this season - he’s more than capable of doing that." Kagawa only wanted United

As United supporters around the world await the completion of Shinji Kagawa’s transfer to Old Trafford, we catch up with Bundesliga expert Raphael Honigstein to shed light on the player set to become the Reds’ first Japanese signing…
How good a signing have United made?It’s a brilliant signing. A lot of clubs would have liked to make the move, but United benefited from one of the rare instances where a player had really made up his mind that he wanted to play for a specific club. Of course money is important, but for him it was almost more of a romantic notion of joining United, and the others had no chance. They tried to get very near United’s offer, but Kagawa had made up his mind that this was his dream and he wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity. All sorts of clubs were trying to sign him and I think it’s a real coup for United to get him.
Which other clubs were interested in him?Well, you never quite know just how far they got because the indications from the player and his agent were always very clear - that he was only going to move to United - so they didn’t get very far. I think Arsenal and Chelsea certainly looked at him, Real Madrid very late on in the game became aware of his potential, but United stole a march on everyone because the player wanted to go there. It’s easy to be cynical and sometimes players just sign for whoever offers the most money, but it’s fair to say this instance was different. He really wanted to go to United and wouldn’t listen to any other offers, as far as I’m aware.
What are his key attributes? Kagawa isn't an Arjen Robben or a Franck Ribery type who picks up the ball and everyone starts shaking with fear; the guy almost works in a stealthier way. He finds space and he touches it when it’s already too late.

Kagawa scores in japan rout

Shinji Kagawa capped a special week by scoring in Japan’s 6-0 World Cup qualifying win over Jordan on Friday. The 23-year-old midfielder, who is set to become United’s first signing of the summer, swept home his country’s fourth goal 10 minutes before the break in Saitama. CSKA Moscow’s Keisuke Honda bagged a hat-trick, with Ryoichi Maeda and Yuzo Kurihara also on target, as the Samurai Blue eased to two wins from two in Group B. Kagawa again opted not to talk about his transfer after the game, instead focusing on Japan’s next match, a tougher assignment against Australia in Brisbane on Tuesday. "It was good to win so well, even if my goal came about through a Jordan mistake," he said. "Our next game will be tough, but we will just try to do what it takes to win." Manchester United step up interest in Everton full-back Baines

Fringe players Ji-Sung Park and the Da Silva twins Fabio and Rafael have been mentioned as possible sweeteners in a deal for the England left-back. KAGAWA ON HIS WAY Manchester United have agreed a fee with Dortmund for the Japan international Goal.com understands that United’s interest in Baines is strong as they pursue a long-term successor for Patrice Evra, who turned 31 last month. Everton have nominally placed a £20 million price tag on Baines, who will deputise for Ashley Cole at left-back for England at Euro 2012. But United are confident that around £12-15m could be enough to secure the signing of the man who was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year and believe they could twist the arm of the cash-strapped Merseysiders if the sum is supplemented by the offer of at least one of United squad members on loan. It is understood that informal discussions have centred on the identity of the players, with Park, who has become surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, and the 21-year-old Da Silva twins among the name mentioned. Everton will push for two players on season-long loans, rather than one, although manager David Moyes’ priority is likely to be a direct replacement for the 27-year-old. The Da Silva twins can play in both full-back positions although Fabio is regarded as the more comfortable of the pair at left-back. He has been told he will go out on loan in the 2012-13 season by Sir Alex Ferguson, and has been earmarked for a switch to Benfica. Fabio has failed to progress as expected at Old Trafford, partly because of a succession of niggling injuries, and Sir Alex has spoken of the youngster's need for regular first-team football. Speaking last week, Baines described United’s reported interest in him as a big compliment: “The United link is flattering. There is no harm in people talking about it because it is a great club. But I'm at a great club as well, a club that I love. "Would it be hard to turn United down? I'm not letting my focus shift to that while I am in camp. I'm focused on what I'm doing at the moment. Would it be hard to leave Everton? Yes, obviously. You know what it means. “I've been there for five years myself but also know first-hand what it means to a lot of people so, yes, it would be.”

Ferdinand rates gingham shirt

Rio Ferdinand has given his approval to United’s new 2012/13 home shirt.The Reds defender is a fan of the gingham-inspired design and appreciates its link to the heritage and tradition of Manchester.
"I like the gingham – it’s what a lot of people have on their shirts at the moment," Rio said.
"It’s great that the design derives from the cotton industry that started in Manchester. It brings it nicely together with the club.
"It’s one you’d wear down the pub and I’m sure the fans will be as pleased with it as the players are."
Ferdinand believes it’s obvious why United have been so well supported around the world for such a long time.
"The history that the club has created over the years, from the early days through to the Munich air crash, resonated with a lot of people around the world," he said.
"Then the success that followed was phenomenal. We had three European Players of the Year in the team at one point: George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton. Not many sides can boast that.
"And of course we’ve also been successful in the years since the Premier League started. Some great players have walked through the door here.
"But it’s a group effort – that’s the great thing about this club. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world but there’s a family environment here and it’s reflected on the pitch."

England regained the Soccer Aid crown with a deserved 3-1 win over the Rest of the World at Old Trafford on Sunday evening.
Goals from former United striker Teddy Sheringham, actor Jonathan Wilkes and ex-Sunderland star Kevin Phillips secured a third Soccer Aid win for the Three Lions who had earlier gone behind to a sublime strike from Kasabian guitarist Sergio Pizzorno.
Just over 67,000 fans - together with some famous faces including Wayne Rooney - were packed inside the Reds' stadium for Soccer Aid 2012, which once again raised millions of pounds for global children’s charity UNICEF. The crowd and peak-time television audience alike were treated to a highly entertaining evening involving a host of football legends and some of the world’s biggest celebrities from the world of TV, film and music.
The Rest of the World, who went into the game as defending champions, may have had the advantage when it came to the number of former United players on their side – Edwin van der Sar lined up in goal with Roy Keane and Jaap Stam starting together at the heart of the defence - but it was England who made the early running.
The Three Lions had good pace on both wings with the young legs of X Factor star Olly Murs, on the right, and JLS’s Aston Merrygold down the left. And both had a couple of early sighters. A neat passing move ended with Merrygold striking an effort straight at Van der Sar, before the Dutch stopper saved well with his feet after an excellent run and shot from United fan Murs, coming off the right wing.

Seven Reds at Euro 2012

Manchester United will have seven representatives at Euro 2012 after the final squads were delivered to UEFA on Tuesday.
Anders Lindegaard has made the Denmark squad after proving his fitness and should compete with Stephan Andersen for a starting spot after Thomas Sorensen was ruled out. Peter Schmeichel's son Kasper has been drafted in as cover for the Stoke keeper.
Roy Hodgson's England have four Reds in their ranks, although Wayne Rooney is suspended for the first two matches. Rooney wears his favourite No10 shirt with in-form Ashley Young taking 11. Phil Jones is at 14 while Danny Welbeck, who is travelling despite taking time to recover from an injury, gets 22.
Nani is in Portugal's party, along with former Old Trafford favourite Cristiano Ronaldo, and Patrice Evra is included in Laurent Blanc's 23-man France squad. David De Gea, as expected, will not feature for Spain as he's instead earmarked to be No1 at the Olympics.

Carrick happy tonshun spotlight

Michael Carrick speaks exclusively to ManUtd.com's Nick Coppack about his sparkling form this season and defying the critics... Firstly, with United's Player of the Year awards coming up, can you reveal which of your team-mates has impressed you most this season? I think Antonio Valencia’s come into some great form. He’s had a few games where he’s almost been unplayable and given full-backs an unbelievably hard time. Jonny Evans has been consistent and stepped in and stepped up hugely. He’s been here a number of years and has plenty of experience, but this season he’s been brilliant. I think Paul Scholes’ return has given everybody a boost, too. That was a big lift for us and he’s played really well. I think Rio deserves a mention as well for how he’s played alongside Jonny. There are probably five or six players who deserve the award. And what about the young lads in the side: how impressed have you been with the character they’ve shown this season? They’ve been great. I think it comes from the boss. As soon as you walk through the door here it’s drilled into you. Not by somebody telling you every day – but you pick it up just by being in and around the squad, watching how we prepare for games and deal with the pressure. There’s no better place to learn that than at Manchester United. The young lads who have arrived at the club or come up through the youth ranks have all got huge amounts of ability and, at different times of the season, they’ve all stood up and played their part. No matter what happens this season they’ll end up better for it. The experience they’ll gain will be invaluable and stand them in good stead for years to come. Of course, we just hope we can give them the best experience of all and finish off the job and win the league.

Reds will bounce back

Phil Jones admits “a lot of questions” have been asked in the Manchester United camp this week following Monday’s derby defeat at the Etihad Stadium. In a match billed as the biggest derby in the history of English football, the Reds missed the chance to all but seal a 20th league title. Instead, Vincent Kompany’s header, in stoppage time at the end of the first half, handed City three points and the advantage in the title race. The Reds were left understandably deflated by the result, but Jones says they’re now fully focussed on bouncing back this weekend when Swansea visit Old Trafford on Sunday. "There have obviously been a lot of questions raised this week, and rightly so,” he said. "We probably didn't play the best we could have on Monday and it is disappointing. "But make no mistake about it: we are level on points with City. Goal difference separates us at the moment and you’ve seen already this season that there have been so many twists and turns. Don't be surprised if you see a few more. I think it will go down to the wire. We know what we have to do: win the two games, take six points and see where that takes us. "Obviously the day after the derby the lads were gutted and massively disappointed. But we have moved on quickly and pushed it to one side. We have put it right in training this week. Manchester united 4-0 Aston villa

United 4 Aston Villa 0 It was all about the response from United to the shock defeat at Wigan and Manchester City's thumping win at Norwich on Saturday. Sir Alex's players answered any questions regarding title credentials emphatically with Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and substitute Nani amongst the goals in a match the leaders dominated from start to finish. Rooney netted an early penalty after ex-Villan Ashley Young was fouled and scored his team's third when on the brink of being substituted. United scored at the end of both halves, through Welbeck and Nani, as the champions opened up a five-point lead again at the top with four games remaining. Player Ratings: David De Gea: Tested in the opening exchanges by Andreas Weimann but had little else to do, apart from showing his concentration levels are always high by tipping over a header by Villa substitute Emile Heskey. Rafael: Didn't feature at Wigan but returned with his usual vim and vigour, with one backheel to Antonio Valencia straight from the Copacabana beach. A cut-back supplied Wayne Rooney with a chance and his only blip was allowing Weimann to muscle him off the ball for a Stephen Ireland opportunity. Otherwise outstanding, his tackling was sharp and he combined superbly with Valencia down the right. Jonny Evans: Composed from the outset and his passing out of defence was largely spot-on. Did overhit one cross from an unfamiliar right-wing position but a fine ball to Valencia for another Rooney chance provided further evidence of his assured distribution and, of course, Paul Scholes would have been proud of Evans' pass that allowed Nani to slip in a late fourth. Rio Ferdinand: Never seems to have a bad game and remains one of the classiest performers in the Barclays Premier League. Reads the game tremendously and always a calming influence, he was in control throughout. A sublime interception and run forward led to Valencia going close to adding to the scoreline. Patrice Evra: Supplied the centre that allowed Danny Welbeck to get the crucial second goal before half time. Also delivered an inviting cross into the path of Valencia, only for the winger to get his shot all wrong. Displayed bravery and passion for the occasion by winning a battle with Ciaran Clark, a clash that ultimately led to the Villan being replaced with concussion. Antonio Valencia: It was a relief to see him involved in the early stages after receiving little of the ball at Wigan and he was back to his usual dazzling form. Provided some telling crosses to the likes of Rooney and Welbeck and also had a deflected drive pushed away by Shay Given. A constant menace. Michael Carrick: Cultured in midfield and stately at times in possession. Involved in the build-up to Welbeck's goal, there were many highlights including a cracking ball out to Evans on the right and a volleyed pass into the path of Rooney after the break. A header to Scholes inside his own box showed his confidence and there was one great moment towards the end when he won a 50-50 tackle, shimmied and then played an accurate pass forward. Booked for a foul on Gary Gardner. Paul Scholes: A joy to watch as he controlled the tempo alongside Carrick and rolled back the years yet again. Villa resorted to strong-arm tactics to try and stop him in his stride but he recovered after treatment and was a class apart for 78 minutes before being replaced. Two sumptuous volleys from outside the area showed why he's been one of the best Ashley Young: Earned the early penalty against his former employers after being felled by Clark inside the box and worked hard down the left. Lucky to escape injury after a dreadful tackle by Alan Hutton and this probably led to his substitution for Nani. Danny Welbeck: Villa's defenders seemed to be finding a knack of getting their bodies in the way whenever he threatened and the ball wasn't breaking for the England striker until the 43rd minute. When Nathan Baker failed to cut out an Evra cross, he reacted smartly to toe the ball into an unguarded net. Only denied more goals by the acrobatic Given, who even had to resort to handling outside the area to frustrate him on one occasion. Wayne Rooney: Two more goals for the Reds' top scorer - a calmly-taken penalty and deflected drive for the third goal. It proved to be his final act before being substituted and, although his passing wasn't up to his usual high standard throughout, he still provided a major influence on the match and could have added to his tally on a few occasions. Substitutes: Nani (for Young, 61m): Another run-out and a goal to show he is ready to play a major role in the final four games. Always a box of tricks, he'll cause defenders problems and showed a cool head to finish his opportunity clinically. Dimitar Berbatov (for Rooney, 73m): The fans were keen to get another look at the Bulgarian and Sir Alex obliged by bringing him on for the closing stages. Played with his usual swagger and style and saw one goalbound attempt blocked. Tom Cleverley (for Scholes, 78m): There will probably come a time when he's asked to replace Scholes full-time but that could still be another season away on Sunday's evidence. Learning from the master and shot over late on when presented with a chance to add a fifth.

Boss keep enjoying it

Sir Alex has encouraged his players to keep enjoying themselves after a 4-0 win over Aston Villa established a five-point lead over Manchester City at the head of the table. The Reds recovered from the setback at Wigan to maul the Midlanders with two goals in each half, although the visitors were upset to concede an early penalty after Ashley Young was sent crashing inside the area. "It was a good result," he told MUTV. "We were careless at times but, at the end of the day, there was some terrific football and some good goals. I'm very satisfied. "There could be twists and turns yet. I think the name of the game now is for us to enjoy ourselves and play with expression, like we did today. Hopefully we'll be alright. You can never be too confident in this game of football. My experience tells me there's always something can bite you on the bum but hopefully we can avoid that and not drop any more points. "It's one game less today and that's what I'll take out of the game. We've won our game with a good performance, which is important at this time of year. The players accepted the fact they lost a game on Wednesday and did something about it. No panic. We played our own game and I'm pleased about that." When asked about his view on the penalty, after Young was sent flying by Ciaran Clark, the boss replied: "He brought him down. There was contact. Ashley jinked and came inside him and he went down quite easily but it was a penalty because he was definitely brought down.

Manchester united 2-0 QPR

Another game chalked off, another three points closer to the Barclays Premier League title, but another nervy and controversial afternoon for the champions against 10-man Queens Park Rangers. Wayne Rooney broke the deadlock with a 15th-minute penalty before Paul Scholes assured the Reds of victory midway through the second period, but Rangers could rightly feel aggrieved of the award of Rooney's spot-kick. Not only was it given for a foul on Ashley Young, who was clearly offside, but referee Lee Mason immediately deemed Shaun Derry's questionable offence worthy of a red card, depriving the visitors of their captain. Rooney's conversion merely reinforced Rangers' defensive resolve, and Mark Hughes' side battled commendably to frustrate the Reds. A host of spurned chances cranked up the jitters inside Old Trafford, before Scholes smashed home a 25-yard effort with just over 20 minutes remaining. Sir Alex Ferguson made just two alterations to the side which started against Blackburn, six days earlier; Chicharito and Phil Jones made way for Danny Welbeck and Ashley Young, with Wayne Rooney moving forward to partner Welbeck in attack. The strike duo combined for the game’s first attempt, with help from Clint Hill. The Rangers defender caught Welbeck with a heavy challenge, 25 yards from goal. An eight-point advantage over City looks decisive and the Betfair market is convinced the title will once again reside at Old Trafford: the Reds are just 1.03 (1/33) to win the Premier League; City are 29 (28/1). But United will still need to be on top form for a second fixture in four days when Sir Alex's men travel to Wigan, who are showing distinct signs of pulling off their now-traditional end-of-season comeback. The Latics were only denied by an injury-time goal at Chelsea at the weekend and, prior to that loss, were unbeaten in four games. Nevertheless, Roberto Martinez’s men are considered massive long-shots to win on Wednesday, trading at 11 (10/1) on Betfair. United are considered "sure things" at 1.36 (4/11), with the draw pretty long at 5.6 (9/2).

The most decorated man in English football certainly knows a thing or two about winning Premier League titles. Speaking exclusively to United Review ahead of the clash against Queens Park Rangers, Ryan Giggs revealed why he’s confident of adding another trophy to his honours list. With seven [six now] games to play, is the squad in good shape for  the final title push? Definitely. We’ve got plenty of  players in good form and we’ve got a good-sized squad now, so the manager can rotate players and keep everybody fresh. We’ve not had the best luck this season – we’ve had injuries to key players such as Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher – and we didn’t have Paul Scholes  for the first half of the campaign, so a lot of credit has to go to the lads who have stepped in and done a great job to get us into this position. If United win the league this season, how would that achievement rank in your career? It would be huge. When you look at the spending power Manchester City have, the injuries we’ve had, the experience we’ve lost – Scholesy for half the season, Edwin van der Sar, John O’Shea, Wes Brown. Rafael maturity earns praise

Sir Alex Ferguson feels right-back Rafael is starting to show real maturity in his game. The Brazilian was outstanding at Blackburn and helped keep another clean sheet against QPR on Sunday. He recovered from a rare slip that almost let in Adel Taarabt to hit the woodwork in the second half before being substituted with a knock. After learning to cope with the Barclays Premier League through experience since arriving from Fluminense as a youngster, the defender is developing into a top-class player. A red card during the Champions League exit to Bayern Munich in April 2010 was a harsh lesson to learn but Rafael is now striking up a fruitful partnership with Antonio Valencia on the flank and is keeping the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and his twin brother Fabio out of the starting line-up at the moment. "I think we've played the same back four over the last few weeks and young Rafa had a really good game [at Blackburn]," said the boss. "He's doing well. He was always a rash, young boy and his enthusiasm was overwhelming at times but he's settled down quite well and is quite calm in his game now. So, by doing that, he's brought his game to a really good pitch at the moment. "He's playing really well and combined well with Valencia. There's a good understanding there." Sir Alex is pleased with the strength of his squad as he looks to close in on a 20th league title. "We had 22 players at Blackburn and had four out injured so that brings it to 26 players," he commented.

Title is in touching distance

manUtd.com's Nick Coppack highlights the reasons why United are now heavy favourites to win the league... Name on the trophy? Not quite. Although even the most pessimistic United fan must surely concede all signs point to a 20th English league title. A quick glance at the league table confirms as much: with just six games to play, the Reds boast an eight-point lead (the biggest margin of the season) and superior goal difference. And yet some supporters still won't permit themselves a smile. "Not until it's in the bag," they say. Such is the strength of United's position, though, Sir Alex's men could draw five of those remaining six games and still win the league by a point should they beat Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on 30 April. And that's assuming City win all their other matches (which would represent a massive turnaround in form from Roberto Mancini's side, who have taken just five points from a possible 15 in the last month). There's certainly little to suggest United are on the brink of collapse. Form is good (the Reds have won 11 of the last 12 league games), the defence looks both settled (Sir Alex has fielded the same back five in the past five fixtures) and solid (David De Gea hasn't conceded in the league for 453 minutes) and the injury list continues to shrink (Tom Cleverley enjoyed a 15-minute cameo against QPR, while Nani - unavailable since early March - has resumed training). What's more, key players keep delivering the goods. Wayne Rooney has netted 14 goals in his last 15 appearances in all competitions, while Antonio Valencia has provided 13 assists and scored four times himself since the beginning of December. As for Paul Scholes... well, since his retirement U-turn, the Reds have taken 34 of a possible 36 points in the league, with the 37-year-old midfielder  

Sir Alex refutes Valencia rumour

Stories in Friday's newspapers that the Ecuadorian has a problem needing attention, albeit at the end of the season, may have concerned supporters given the winger's recent contribution to United's surge into first place. However, Valencia's manager dismissed the reports at his pre-match press conference. "I don't know where that story on his ankle has come from," said Sir Alex. "[An operation] has never been on the agenda or been discussed. He has a [metal] plate there but at the moment it stays there. "Antonio's form has been unbelievable. When you get players hitting form, their best form, at this time of year, it's a bonus."

Nani back for busy week

Nani will give Sir Alex Ferguson another attacking option on Sunday after overcoming a recent foot injury. The Portuguese winger will compete for a place with fellow wingers Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia, both of whom scored in Monday night's 2-0 win at Blackburn. "Nani has trained all week," revealed Sir Alex at his Good Friday press conference. "He's a good addition [to the squad], he's such a talented player. His return makes the squad stronger. We need a strong squad now with three games in seven days. Having more players means I can change the team around for those games." Sir Alex added that Anderson and Michael Owen are still not available for a game that he expects to be difficult. "The game against QPR will be another like we experienced on Monday against a team fighting for their survival. They’re never easy – it wasn’t easy on Monday, but we managed to get a fantastic result with late goals. I don’t mind if we have to wait until the last 10 minutes again to win on Sunday. QPR have had two fantastic results in their last two games, beating Liverpool after being 2-0 down and then beating Arsenal 2-1. "Knowing how Sparky [Mark Hughes] is and what a fighter he is we know his team will fight. Most teams mirror their manager anyway. So as much as we’re looking forward to the game, it’s going to be a hard one."

Ferdinand: Still all to play for

Rio Ferdinand insists United's celebrations at the final whistle at Blackburn on Monday night were by no means a sign that the Reds think the title is won. The 2-0 victory at Ewood Park brought to an end a disappointing run of results against Rovers on their own patch and in turn gave Sir Alex's men a five-point lead over rivals Manchester City at the Barclays Premier League summit. Many now believe United are now a sure bet for title no.20, but Ferdinand maintains that talk of another championship crown already being in the bag is far too premature. [The celebrations at Blackburn] were blown out of all proportion," he told ManUtd.com. "Since I have been at the club, for the last 10 years, it has been a hard place to go. We have not had good results there and we wanted to put that right and make sure we got a good result. "We are in the position we would like to be in at this stage of the season but it is not over, and I don't think it is a time that says we won the league. Those celebrations weren't because we thought it was over, it was because we got a good result at a place where, a couple of years ago, they helped stop us winning the league. So it was nice to get one back over them. "There is still a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season, when the trophies are handed out," he added. "We have to make sure we apply ourselves in the right way for every game. If we do that, put in the performances and get the results we want, we will hopefully be lifting the trophy at the end of the season." Giggs expects sparky fight

Manchester United legend Mark Hughes will set a stern test for the Reds this weekend, according to his former team-mate Ryan Giggs. Queens Park Rangers will be the fourth club to come to Old Trafford under Sparky's stewardship, after previous visits with Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and Fulham. So while facing United away may be a new experience for some of the QPR players, Giggs warns their gaffer has gained enough knowledge to represent a threat to the Reds. "Mark’s managed quite a few clubs now so he’s not a new manager anymore. He’ll have them well drilled and well prepared, just like the majority of teams that come to Old Trafford. They’ll make it difficult for us," Giggs told ManUtd.com. QPR are the third relegation-threatened side to meet United in the last four games, following the Reds' victories over Wolves and Blackburn Rovers. Giggs thinks QPR could prove to be the toughest of the lot to take on, given the character of his fellow Welshman and the work he has done so far at the West London club. "He's a fighter and he has good staff around him. He made some good signings in the January transfer window and has a lot of quality in the side . Vidich has faith in united

Nemanja Vidic claims he knew United would still mount a serious defence of the title in his absence because the club never relies on one player.

When the influential captain was ruled out for the season after damaging knee ligaments at Basel in December, many commentators feared the Reds' campaign would falter but Sir Alex's team are five points clear in the Barclays Premier League table with seven games remaining.

Paying tribute to the younger players who have covered for the injured stars at vital times, the Serbian also feels the manager is is largely responsible for keeping the club in a position to challenge for the top domestic honour.

"It doesn't matter who is out," Vidic told PA Sport. "Manchester United never depend on one player. If you look at the past, players have left and fans have said how are we going to do but they still win titles and trophies.

"That is why Manchester United are special. That is why the manager is the best at replacing players and finding young players. He showed that over the years. I believed we would challenge for the title. We changed some players last season and others went.

"We got some young players. We didn't expect the young players would play that many games and would have so much influence on the team. This is a great plus for the club. Obviously we have had some injuries over the past year, which is another difficult thing we have gone through. We have had so many players get injured at different times. But we have coped and been very competitive with Manchester City. Now we are at the top of the league and have a big chance to win it."

Rooney eyes top four finish

Wayne Rooney's priority for the remainder of the campaign is to help the Reds to a 20th title triumph, but the striker also has one eye on cementing a place in the top four of the club's all-time scorers list before the season's out.

Rooney, who has netted 28 times this term, is just four behind George Best and Dennis Viollet in the goals chart on 175.

Winning the league is Wazza's ultimate aim, but climbing the scoring ladder remains a personal goal.

"I’ve seen about the all-time scoring record and a few people have reminded me of it as well, but I’m still a long, long way away from Sir Bobby [Charlton, on 249 goals] and Denis Law [on 237]," the striker told Inside United.

"I’m obviously proud to be up there and be in touching distance of some legends of the club. Hopefully I can overtake them soon."

Rooney still has a long way to go before he can take over top spot from Sir Bobby Charlton who is sitting on 249, but it's a target he'd love to beat one day.

"It would be an unbelievable feeling if I could get his record, but as I said before I’m still a long way away. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to do it," added the 26-year-old.

"It’s not something I look at all the time, it’s something I’ll probably take more notice of when I’ve finished playing. But I’m certainly proud to be where I am at the moment."

Sir Alex salutes Red Army

The 7,000-strong travelling Red Army were credited with their part in United's invaluable 2-0 victory at Blackburn.As Sir Alex Ferguson's side patiently toiled for a breakthrough at Ewood Park, the choral onslaught bellowed by the packed Darwen End helped haul United to three huge points.
"They were fantastic," marvelled Sir Alex Ferguson, speaking to Sky Sports. "They are unbelievable. They deserved the result tonight because they never stopped. They urged us on the whole way; they almost sucked the ball in.
"It's like the Stretford End at times, in the last 15 minutes of matches, and that's what it was like tonight."
Ashley Young, scorer of the Reds' killer second goal, was similarly effusive in his praise of the away support, insisting: “They played a massive part in getting the win.
"They were singing from the first minute right until the end. It was great to see some of the fans when we came out and we are delighted to get the three points for them.”

Welbeck gets Rooney's vote

Wayne Rooney believes strike partner Danny Welbeck would be a worthy winner of the Player of the Season award at Old Trafford after an impressive contribution for the Reds in attack this term.The 21-year-old has netted ten goals so far in 2011/12 - his first full campaign as a regular in the senior squad. But it's not just his goals which have proved crucial to United's title charge, it's been his overall play which has caught the eye of fans and team-mates alike.
"There are a few candidates [for Player of the Season]… but I’d have to say Welbeck," Rooney tells this month's issue of Inside United.
"To play so many games for United in his first full season has been brilliant. There has been a lot of pressure on him but he’s done really well and scored some important goals for us.
"He got an opportunity from the start of the season and he came in and played very well and scored a few goals. He’s an exciting player and credit to him for the way he’s performed – he’s played in a lot of matches this season."
Rooney has been the first to offer advice and support to his strike partner with whom he has developed a great understanding.
"Yeah, it’s been good," added Wazza, when asked the partnership. "He brings a lot of energy to the team; he works very hard and always has defenders on the back foot which is great for me as it gives me space to get on the ball.
"He’s always a threat in the box as well, he’s quick and a difficult player to play against

De Gea set for Rovers rematch

Sir Alex Ferguson is backing David De Gea to demonstrate the turnaround in his fortunes when he again faces Blackburn Rovers - the side who gave him a New Year's Eve hangover earlier this season.
The Spanish goalkeeper has played every game for United since the start of February, a run that has helped him build his confidence after a baptism of fire culminated in Rovers' shock 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford on 31 December.
Some of De Gea's performances in the last two months have proved pivotal in tight wins against the likes of Norwich City and most recently Fulham.
"It took David time to adapt to the different ways of the English game as opposed to the Spanish game," admitted Sir Alex on Thursday.
"The area where he was being criticised really was his aerial ability in the box. In the Blackburn game at Old Trafford, he should have dealt with the last corner kick better. He knew that. He has addressed that area and it’s a great improvement.’
"He didn’t let it [the criticism] get to him and the boy has just improved with every game. He’s playing with confidence.
"The other night, he made two or three really terrific punches and blocks when Fulham started to propel the ball into the box. This showed the fantastic improvement he has made."
